Coventry Canal is a key feature adjoining the Site which the proposals can complement, opening up views and further public access, directly from Sandy Lane.
The design of the Scheme will also call back to the area’s industrial and motoring heritage.
New public realm will be created to support community and cultural events around Daimler Powerhouse.
Green spaces and a play area will be provided for children.
The opportunity to create a marker building on the northern point along Sandy Lane. This building will serve as a the gateway into the site, and improve the street’s character by creating active edges and public realm interventions.
Regeneration brings the opportunity to create much stronger visual and physical connections between Sandy Lane and the Canal, opening up views towards the Powerhouse and the canalside beyond.
The Daimler Powerhouse, former Daimler offices and distinctive ‘saw-toothed’ profile of the former Daimler factory buildings can inspire new architectural forms and use of materials that recall the site’s rich industrial heritage.
The relatively prominent northern part of the site – activated by the creative arts that have taken over the Powerhouse – contrasts with the more tranquil area to the south. This presents an opportunity to create complementary character areas, reinforced by the landscape and public realm strategies and varied housing typologies.
